Through painting, I explore ideas of structural and societal disintegration, physical decay, and our human ability to persevere through it. A large amount of my work is abstract and full of expressive strokes and movement. However, my most recent series of paintings incorporate representational images of the body and text in abstract spaces. The spaces are heavy and textured. They have dark earthy color palettes and feel like being underground-buried but protected. Underground, where living things rot and where new things grow. Destruction of people and places are only increasing as wars persist, and climate change ravages the environment. What can we do? Give in and be destroyed ourselves or transmute the tragedies into something else. For me, painting is the outlet that allows me to press on.
